DIY Vanilla Extract Mosquito Repellent (Does It Really Work?)

Looking for a natural mosquito repellent? Here’s how vanilla extract is used, whether it really works, and how to make it yourself.

A Battle with Bugs

As we bask in the warmth of summer here in the northern hemisphere, especially in tropical or Mediterranean regions, many of us find ourselves in a constant battle with mosquitoes and other pesky bugs. Whether you're enjoying a barbecue in the backyard, hiking a scenic trail, or simply relaxing on the porch, it's almost inevitable that these pesky invaders will make an appearance, threatening to ruin your evening. We instinctively reach for the insect repellent, but for many of us, finding natural alternatives has become imperative.

Why Choose Natural Over Chemical Repellents?

Why cover ourselves in chemicals when we can opt for something natural and just as effective? On our vanilla farm on the Caribbean Island of Nevis, we are no strangers to mosquitoes and the challenge of repelling them. As passionate vanilla growers, we are always looking for innovative ways to use vanilla beyond the kitchen.

Expert Approval: The Science Behind Vanilla's Effectiveness

Recently, we shared a simple recipe for a natural vanilla extract repellent, and thanks to our friends and followers, Lizzie Reed and Fiona Twelftree, we can say that it has the thumbs-up from the experts. They spotted an article quoting Shannon Harlow-Ellis, an associate certified entomologist and technical specialist for Mosquito Joe, a pest control company. Harlow-Ellis explains, "Vanilla extract, like some other plant derivatives, will mask the odour mosquitoes are searching for when looking for a blood meal." She adds that it's important to use pure vanilla extract, as imitation vanilla contains additives that can attract insects with its sugary aromas.

Pure vs. Imitation: The Importance of Quality Vanilla

Now, we know what you might be thinking—real vanilla extract can be pricey. Yes, it is more expensive than chemical repellents, but there's a good reason for that. Chemicals are cheap because they are mass-produced, while vanilla extract is extremely labour-intensive to produce. However, if you’re committed to a natural lifestyle and want to avoid blasting yourself with chemicals, this is a fantastic alternative.

Our Vision: Sustainable Vanilla from Nevis

Here on Nevis, we are dedicated to sustainability and hope to soon produce our own vanilla extract from our farm, Vanilla Paradise Nevis, turning it into the "magic repellent" we all need. Until then, why not try making your own? Here’s our simple recipe for a natural vanilla extract repellent:

DIY Natural Vanilla Extract Insect Repellent

  • 15 milliliters (1 tablespoon) of pure vanilla extract

  • 240 milliliters (1 cup) of water

Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle, shake well, and apply it to your skin before heading outdoors. Reapply as needed, especially if you're sweating or swimming. Not only does it help make outdoor moments more comfortable, it also fills the air with one of the world’s most beloved aromas — sweet and soothing, just like the island breeze here in Nevis.

Vanilla DIY Repellent: Your Questions Answered

Does vanilla really repel mosquitoes?
Pure vanilla extract has a strong natural aroma that can help mask the scents mosquitoes are attracted to. While it’s not as long-lasting as chemical repellents, many people find it effective for short periods outdoors.

How long does a vanilla repellent last?
Because it’s a natural solution, it typically lasts between 30 minutes and an hour. Reapplication is recommended, especially in warm or humid conditions.

Is vanilla safe to use on skin?
Pure vanilla extract is generally well tolerated, but as with any natural ingredient, it’s best to test a small area of skin first, particularly for children or sensitive skin.
